Mai is a teenager who lived in the fire nation until his father being appointed Governor of the city of Omashu, Earth Kingdom city that was recently dominated by his people.
She lived there until the Azula appear. The Princess said he was in a "mission" and needed the help of a small elite team. Mai accepted and was even with it.
Mai, as I said at the fifth episode of season (the beach, book: Fire), was only daughter and spoiled. She said that her mother always gave everything I wanted, where it stayed quiet and if acted.
When I was a child, Mai was doodling around with blue and Ty Lee, and like the blue Zuko and brother is still passionate he loucamente. In book three (fire), the two start a courtship.
The girl shows an unwillingness to everything and is always an expression dead on the front. However, their techniques to shoot arrows and her struggle with knives makes it a very dangerous fighter.
